Feeding well is absolutely an advantage you should be using to get an edge. It is a reliable way to outshine others in the show ring, because most showmen, even with great sheep, don’t do it well. In this book, you are going to learn to be able to get your sheep into that sweet spot for show condition and body fat. Even if you spend less on your animal, you can feed to win. It takes paying attention to the details, feeding with intention, and knowing what to do. You can really dial in your lamb’s look so that its best is better than a great animal’s average. A lot of showmen spend a lot of money on an animal only to take it home and feed it however. An animal that isn’t fed intentionally, weighed regularly, monitored, or exercised is never going to look its best.
Feeding well is one of the biggest advantages you can give your animal for show day. I know breeders who have sold two equally good lambs. One they sold to someone that let it get fat, and they had no chance at winning at the fair after that. The other kept the lamb fit and brought it into the show ring right where it needed to be in regards to body condition. The judge of the first lamb is going to disregard it, it doesn’t ‘look’ like a champion show lamb and it might not even win its class. The second lamb is going to catch the judge’s attention right away and he is going to keep coming back to feel that one just because it is better fed than the others in the show ring.
I’m not saying you can win with poorly bred sheep. I don’t believe that. I think you need to buy a show lamb and start with a good animal. However, you would be surprised how well you can compete with a good lamb even against a great one that wasn’t fed to its potential.
You might be thinking, what does this have to do with showmanship? If you are only here for showmanship this absolutely still applies to you. Showmanship is demonstrating that you know how to show your animals better than anyone else. What better way to show your animals than to show that you have kept them fit and spent time on the details that make them look that way come show day. Showmanship is just as much about what you do at home as it is about what you do on show day. The only difference is that the judge isn’t judging by who has the best lamb, he is judging who presents their animal the best. Feeding is therefore, a key to success in both rings. It is intimately connected to your success both in market and in showmanship.
